PSHE & RSE
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to let their light shine
Intent for PSHE
At Church Hill C of E Junior School, the teaching and learning of PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community; therefore enabling their light to shine individually. They learn how society is organised and governed; they also experience the process of democracy in school, for example through the school council elections. We provide opportunities for pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities, and appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse society.
While schools are not required to teach PSHE education, we believe the subject makes a crucial contribution to our school’s ethos and duties. The Education Act 2002 requires all schools to teach a curriculum that is "broadly based, balanced and meets the needs of pupils". Schools must "promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life" while having a duty to keep pupils safe.
Our PSHE programme of study at Church Hill, named the GoGivers, is therefore intended to fulfil the statutory responsibility to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental (SMSC) development as well as providing opportunities to focus on the delivery of social and emotional aspects of learning.
